On Thursday the 6th of June 2024, the skies were void of stars as all the stars converged at The Mix Hub in Osu, Accra for a private screening of Paapa’s Life Lessons by Gene Adu of The Creative Inc. (TGMA red carpet introduction, is that you?)

This was an intimate event organized by Gene Adu and Cassette for a first time viewing of the film that was shot early on in the year.

At the Mix for the screening.

Prior to this event, invited guests were sent very creatively thought through invitations in the form if Cassettes that had 8 original tracks created as part of the film experience. It was no mean task to find cassette player to listen to it, but I successfully did and my oh my, was I impressed! It was worth the hassle. (*Makes mental note to get a cassette player because I have a feeling this is the first of many to come.)

The event started at 6:30pm prompt as publicized with a cocktail and session that saw the invitees interacting and networking. Indeed, times flies by when you’re having fun and before we knew it, 7:45pm was here and it was time to behold the masterpiece.

In Paapa’s life lessons, a grandfather passes on a legacy of lessons to his grandson as he reflescts on his experiences, ambitions and observations.

The short film marks the return on award winning filmmaker Gene Adu into the scripted narrative space. He describes it as a collection of deeply personal thoughts and a layered piece of art that he hopes audiences would sit with and replay over time

The film is the first collaboration between The Creative Inc and Cassette, and features performances from Andrew Bunting (Water and Garri) Princess Fathia Nkrumah (The kids are not alright) and Andrew Tandoh Adote who has graced many stage plays in recent times (The God’s are not to blame, The legend of Akusika etc) and plays Grandpa in this film. It also sees the introduction of Michael Angelo Taylor, a fresh face to grace the screens who plays the Grandson.

It was time for a Q and A session after screening moderated by Helen Appiah-Ampofo with the Gene and Jeremiah Kofi-Sam (Executive Producer). There were also brief words from some of the cast and questions from the audience to wrap it all up.

The male perspective in the film was a refreshing take as often times the relationships, estranged or cherished, that most females have with women in their family are portrayed in films. I personally enjoyed the narrative story telling style of the film and the visuals were impeccable. The program started on time and ended just in time for bedtime (Hello again, TGMAs) I would absolutely recommend the film to anyone who is looking for an emotionally adept film just in time for Father’s day.

The film is set to be released on the 13th of June 2024 on YouTube. Follow The Creative Inc and CassetteGh on their socials for more details. Also check out more footages and photos from the event on @aj4short_ on IG.
